"All the

Scientific and Cultural Organization) Conventions on the
protection of cultural heritage – and in particular the
1954 Convention and its Protocols, which aim to ensure
the survival (no destruction tolerated) and maintenance
in situ (no pillage or illicit export tolerated) of this
heritage – offer the following main advantages and benefits
to their States Parties ..."

Crimes Against Humanity

"Being convinced that damage to cultural property belonging
to any people whatsoever means damage to the cultural
heritage of all mankind, since each people makes its
contribution to the culture of the world;"
"Considering that the preservation of the cultural heritage
is of great importance for all peoples of the world and that
it is important that this heritage should receive
international protection;"
"Being of the opinion that such protection cannot be
effective unless both national and international measures
have been taken to organize it in time of peace;"
The above three excerpts all come from the
Preamble to
the 1954 Hague Convention, the full text of which can be
viewed at:

With due regard for the fact that the importance of cultural
heritage --
of ALL origins -- was
stressed in the above way (in
1954), I'll be very
interested to see what (if any) significance our
legal
profession here in the Republic of Ireland attaches to
such statements in
2009, as they proceed with the
"Tara Protestors" court case in
Trim Court
(County Meath, Republic of Ireland) during this
coming week (beginning on Monday at 10.30 a.m.
May 11th,
and continuing until Friday15th May).
I'll also be very interested to see what (if any)
significance our
"main stream media" attaches to
statements of the above kind in their reporting of this
particular case: which, incidentally, appears to have been
delayed in a manner that possibly violates the "trial within
a reasonable time" principle mentioned in
Article 5.3
and
Article 6.1 of the
European Convention on Human Rights Act 2003
(Republic of Ireland), the full text of which can be viewed

, and which in turn has meant that work on this PPP (Public
Private Partnership) Toll Road has been allowed to go on for
many, many months longer that it perhaps should have done.
